Google Gives Away Its First $1,337 Award

Google Gives Away Its First $1,337 Award

On Wednesday Google surprised the developers community by announcing the winner of the top prize of $1337 (an odd sum indeed) for their “security fixes awards”. It remains unclear however (for the less tech savvy) what exactlly this $1337 security vulnerability is as Google described it as; “Integer overflows in WebKit JavaScript objects” . Google’s Chrome releases blog’s announcement reads:

Congratulations to Sergey Glazunov on receiving the first $1337 Chromium Security Rewardfor bug 35724.

A few months ago Google started a program in which they offered to pay developers who found security vulnerabilities in Chromium and Chromium OS source codes. Depending on the magnitude of the vulnerability, Google would then dish out awards respectively. The top award has been the much coveted $1337 but Google never did show any indication of what the criterion would be used in determining which ”prize brackets” certain vulnerabilities would fall into.
