No Chrome OS Device At Computex – Acer

Acer has just gone ahead and burst or bubble. In recently we published what we believed to be a “leak” regarding Acer showcasing a set of Chrome OS devices at Computex; it turns out this wasn’t true.

Today Acer, in an unprecedented move, just a few days after the rumours were leaked has released a press statement in a bid to clarify that there will be no such device at Computex. It’s also worth noting that it is relatively peculiar for a company to clarify that it is ‘not working on a specific device’.  Nevertheless Acer did reiterate it’s intentions to take Chrome OS seriously it’s desire to see the success of the new platform.

It therefore seems as if we have a long wait before Google’s much anticipated Chrome OS is released (or is at least showcased in working prototypes). Needless to say; devices running beta editions of the open source Chromium OS will probably be a common site at Computex.  This will hopefully keep us entertained before Google releases it’s final ‘retail’ version of Chrome OS; in the meantime, we’ll need to keep strong!

Below is the press release from Acer:

Manno, 17 May 2010 – Despite recent rumours in the press regarding the launch of Chrome OS based netbooks at Computex, Acer today confirms that it has no short-term plans for such a product.

Acer believes that Google Chrome OS is without doubt an exciting product announcement and deserves it’s full attention as well as an in-depth study of its potential from a consumers perspective.

Acer is naturally interested in any product or service that enhances the overall experience of its products and will of course be following the development and progress of Google Chrome and the evolution of Google’s overall product strategy very closely.
