Google Now Preparing Chrome OS App Store

Google Now Preparing Chrome OS App Store

Google announced today at it’s I/O event in California that they are now making preparations for a Chrome OS App store. This store will be accessible not only from their upcoming operating system (Chrome OS) but also through the Chrome browser. The App store will be named the “Chrome Web Store” and it already has a placeholder website which you can visit here. Google also announced that it’s new App store will be launched “latter on this year” and they have called on all developers who are interested to get an early foot in.

The Chrome Web Store opens later this year. Users will be able to discover a broad range of amazing web apps while developers will be able to reach millions of new users.

And with all the confusion as to how cloud based Apps would be installed on Chrome OS; Google went on to explain (though briefly) exactly what a web App is, what’s different about it from any website and most of all how it will be “installed” on Chrome OS:

An installable web app is a normal web site with a bit of extra metadata. You build and deploy this app exactly as you would build and deploy any web app, using any server-side or client-side technologies you like. The only thing that is different about an installable web app is how the app is packaged.

With the launch of the Chrome Web Store it seems like Google is still on target for their release of Chrome OS. Judging by the current trend in event’s we expect a ‘completed’ version of Chrome OS by July; just in time for Google’s mid 2010 completion deadline.

If you are a developer and are interested in learning more about the Chrome Web Store; you can read the available documentation here.

  1. If the apps are all in the new tab, where did the app menu in the Chrome OS demo go? Where do you open panels from? Is there an option to get the app menu back?
