Google Chrome Hits 70 million Users

Yesterday during the first day of the I/O event, Google announced that it’s Chrome brower has hit the 70 million user mark. This is a sharp incnrease from barely a year ago when they annonced their 30 milliom users milestone. This is still child’s play compared to Firefox’s over 365 million users, but when looked at in context, Chrome is doing astonishingly well. The browser is less than 3 years old, it has never been bundled with any OS (unlike firefox, IE or Safari) and I think it’s worth repeating that it’s less that it’s less than 3 years old! Below is a chart showing the growth rates of the two browsers:

Chrome’s exponential growth rate is indeed a threat to Firefox, but even so Google’s browser is still a long way away. Despite this, with the sheer might of a company such as Google pushing for the Chrome browser it won’t be amazing to see Firefox cowering in the corner in the next few years. For instance already the Android platform has suppassed Apple’s Iphone to become the second most used smartphone OS on the planet. All this despite the fact that Apple was the first on the market with it’s Iphone. It’s therefore not far fetched to envisage a similar trend in the browser market were long time market leaders like IE and firefox may have their days numbered.
