Google TV Officially Launched – Looks Amazing!
After many months of rumours and news leaks Google has finally officially launched their much awaited Google TV platform. Indeed this was all announced this morning at the Google I/O event in California. It was no secret that Google was excited about the new platform and more so the developers in attendance couldn’t contain their applause.
Details revealed today are as follows; Google TV is set to be powered by Android 2.1 (and latter on the Android 2.2). Already Google has partnered with Adobe (which will supply flash 10.1 built in), Sony, Logitech, Bet Buy, Intel (which will supply atom processors), and Dish Network. In their grand keynote event Google jetted in all CEO’s of each of these partner companies to set out their vision for Google TV for the coming year.
Sony and Logitech announced a new set of Google TV products which will be launched in time for Christmas this year. Sony will be working on a new range of televisions running Google TV and Logitech will be launching a Google TV set top box that should plug into your current HDTV (along with other peripheral devices). These deices are pictured below:
Here is what Google has to say about their new creation:
Google TV is a new experience made for television that combines the TV you know and love with the freedom and power of the Internet. Watch an overview video below, sign up for updates, and learn more about how to develop for Google TV.
Some exciting features of Google TV include:
- You will be able to install and run any App from the Android market and use them on your TV (thats a choice of over 50 000 Apps).
- Seemless switching between your TV and the Web
- Will come with a fully fledged Chrome browser meaning that you are not only able to surf the Web unhindered but you will also be able to install the upcoming Web Apps which were also announced yesterday by Google.
- Comes with Flash 10.1
- It is powered by a full version of Android 2.1 hence anything that your Android phone can do, you will be able to do with your tele!
The above features are just the tip of the ice berg; you really need to watch the keynote speech to fully appreciate the “revolution” that Google has set in motion today. Over the next few days I will publish the full keynote video when it is released. For now though, enjoy the demonstration video provided by Google above; I have also attached some pictures of the Google TV launch session: (courtesy of Techcrunch)

i dont fully understand the need for this. isnt it basicly just a bigger monitor connected to your computer?
yes but not just that. I think the main emphasis is the seamless integration of the internet to the tv. Not only that but integration of Android OS turns your otherwise boring and mundane PC into an amazingly powerful entertainment device. I think the proof is in watching the keynote video. I will try and source it in the next few days. do stick around..
thanks for your comment Alex
Is this will be able to share your TV over the internet, just as SlingBox?
Thank You.
Hey Jose!
According to details available so far (from the I/O event) it doesn't seem like there will be a Slingbox capability built into Google TV…BUT; because Google TV is based on the full Android 2.1 operating system…I would not be amazed if Google made some API's available to allow developers to create Apps that could do this.
here's the keynote if you are interested. It's a fascinating product and watching the keynote gives a lot of context to it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASZbArr7vdI&fe…
