Hexxeh Releases ‘Chromium OS Vanilla’
Today, Hexxeh revealed a new build of Chromium OS which he seems to have code named ‘Vanilla’. This new release is straight from Google and he has described it as “beta quality” on his blog. He empasizes that due to this the build may not even be stable enough to run for some people but may run for others:
The downloads below are of beta quality and therefore aren’t guaranteed to even work (no human tests these before you see them, we’ll eventually mark certain builds as tested to show that they boot and have a basic level of functionality). However, if these do work for you (and there’s every chance they will), you can expect a bleeding edge version of Chromium OS.
Hexxeh goes on to clarify that the new Chromium OS Vanilla is actually completely unmodified unlike his previous releases such as ‘Chromium OS Zero‘ and ‘Flow‘. This basically means that the source code is provided by Google in it’s intirity;
This means that now you don’t have to wait for me to release a new build to try the latest and greatest that ChromiumOS has to offer, you can just hit up the new ChromiumOS Vanilla page linked at the bottom of this post and take the newest build for a spin.
Below are some major improvements from Chromium OS Flow:
- Revamped login UI – your username is remembered and you can take a photo to appear with your login using your webcam
- 3G modem support
- Chrome Web Store ready
- Lots, lots faster
- Official ChromiumOS updater (my servers for this aren’t yet live, though)
- Browser sync
Further details about the new Chromium OS distro will emerge as the days go by. As Hexxeh explained himself, due to the fact that there is hardly any human involvement in producing the daily updated builds; the whole project is prone to risk and error.
