No Chrome OS Tablet…yet – So Stop Rumouring!
Over the last few months there has been a lot of speculation over the supposed release of a Chrome OS powered device. It’s not suffice to say; all these rumours have been spurred on by an unwavering, wishful craving for a worthy competitor to Apple’s Ipad.
None the less Google has been consistent in pointing out that it has no plans what so ever of releasing a tablet device in the short to medium term. In July this year Eric Schmidt himself was quoted as saying that such plans are none existent:
We’ve talked about it. We have a reference spec for Chrome OS, we have a couple of hardware partners all lined up and the open source is all out there. It’s on schedule and it will happen later this year. Let’s see how well those partners do first. My guess is we won’t need to. The PC industry is different from the phone industry. The PC industry is used to working with Microsoft, whereas the mobile industry was not used to working with software.
It seems as if the rumour mills have paid little or no attention to Google’s very clear posturing on the matter. Quite recently, new rumours surfaced about an alleged Chrome OS powered Tablet PC which Google was supposedly working on in conjunction with HTC. These rumours are yet again unfounded and it is quite fascinating how media houses across the world are fighting over morsels of “tablet news”. It’s quite insane!
Recent Denial by Google Anders Sandholm
Anders Sandholm, Google’s Senior Product Manager yet again revealed that Chrome OS will be geared for netbooks and not tablets. This was during an interview he had with TechRadar this past week:
What we are focusing on is netbooks in terms of form-factor and providing a really good experience for that,
He went on to say:
Chrome OS is, of course, an open source project and there are different experiments in things like touch and other form-factors, so we are looking into that but there’s nothing new to announce there.
In Conclusion
If and when you read about Chrome OS Tablet rumours, news and leaks; know that these rumours are false. There is no evidence what so ever that Google will be releasing any such device soon and neither will it’s partners. Rather, it is more prudent for the blogosphere to focus more on the impending onslaught of Google Chrome OS powered netbook device which are set to hit the stores any time.
