Google Reignites Chrome Ad Campaign

Google Reignites Chrome Ad Campaign

It seems like Google has reignited their Chrome Browser Ad campaign in the last few days.  The search giant has began to push ads through it’s Adsense network so aggressively that it has become difficult to visit a website without seeing one.

This is reminiscent of their previous attempt to kick start the Chrome Browser a year after it’s release. The company not only pushed ads through Adsense, but they placed an ad on the Google Search page (see image below) and they even attempted to launch a viral ad campaign on YouTube.

Google’s ad campaign was arguably successful; the Chrome Browser quickly gained market share, hitting the 7o million users by April this year. This was barely two years after Chrome was first launched in September 2008. The graph below shows the exponential growth rate of Chrome’s market share during the period of Google’s ad campaign:

Ever since Google made their first ‘push’ for the adoption of Chrome they pulled down their ads. It seemed like their adsense campaign was over but they continued to release some interesting videos on their YouTube channel to highlight the speed of their browser. It’s then a big surprise to see that they have began to ‘push’ Chrome through their ad networks once more.

Why they are doing this

The possible release of the Google Web Store, Chrome OS and Google TV in October this year could be the main reason why Google has chosen to begin advertising the Chrome Browser once more. After-all, Chrome will also be able to run web applications like Chrome OS and Google TV. It then makes sense that Google is planning on expanding the Chrome user base in time for the launch of it’s Web Store this year.

Implications for Chrome OS?

This trend by Google of ‘stuffing’ the Internet with a flood of ads can also point to their possible strategy for Chrome OS. It is feasible for Google to adopt a similar strategy when advertising their upcoming operating system. It will be interesting to see whether such tactics can gain the search giant as much success as they have had with the Chrome Browser.
