Jolicloud On Collision Course With Chrome OS

Jolicloud On Collision Course With Chrome OS

As many of you read on Techcrunch today; Jolicloud has dropped a massive bombshell. It seems like the tiny French company has finally confirmed that recent rumours regarding a possible ‘Jolibook’ have been true all along. Is it me or does everyone see that Jolicloud is headed for a nasty collision with Google Chrome OS?

Well…let me explain myself.

Today’s announcement was a ‘bombshell’ because Jolicloud is joining a select group of operating systems that have dedicated hardware. It has long been the preserve for gigantic companies like Apple and Windows to release OS’s that only work on specific hardware. Other operating systems have always been second class citizens; merely molding themselves around standards that the big boys defined.

It’s mind boggling that a company that employs less that 50 employees and has no experience in hardware is planning on releasing a netbook in a bid to revolutionize an already stagnating netbook market. I mean…what percentage market share does Jolicloud have in the OS market anyway? It’s barely more that a single percentage point; that’s the answer!

A collision with Chrome OS

We all know that Jolicloud will be a competng with Chrome OS when it is released some time before the end of this year. A company with less than $10 million dollars capitalization aims to take on the likes of multi-billion dollar Google. Google has battled Apple well with its Android OS and has arguably won. So what tricks does Jolicloud have in its war-chest to counter the viral release of Google’s first cloud operating system?

Crappy device

The Jolicloud CEO was (today) caught on tape brandishing a tatty box, comparing his (most probably) sub $300 plastic JoliBook to the new generation of MacBook Air. I mean, how does that even make sense? So Jolicloud will take on the ‘unibody’ Mac Book Air with it’s plastic ‘JoliBooks’? And moreso, will the Jolibook take on the upcoming Speedbooks from Google? The answer is no…it will fail!

Why would I want Jolicloud??

Afterall, if I had a choice between an operating system designed by Google and an OS like Jolicloud…well; it’s a no-brainer. Jolicloud is heading for a nasty collision with Chrome OS…and it’s not gonna be a pretty scene.

  1. What? An article rubbishing Jolicloud by the founder of the Chrome OS Site whose dream device is a Chrome OS Tablet. What a surprise! Submitted by a happy Jolicloud user on his stagnant old netbook who is looking forward to continuing to enjoy the output from that delusional French company for as long as he can ;-)

  2. This has nothing to do with Macbook Air, which is a high-end very small and light full blown Apple computer and is not a Netbook. Jolicloud and Chrome are designed to run well on meager netbooks which may not be powerful enough for full-blown operating systems. Jolibook versus Speedbook will depend largely on how nice, and how thin the actual hardware is. if Google's Speedbook looks nice, is not too thick and has a good battery and display and costs much less than half the price of a Macbook Air it will sell well. And if existing netbooks can be converted to run on either Chrome or Jolicloud, they can be reborn, because their weakest link is heavy old Windows. For the Jolibook to succeed it has to be thin and good looking, or extremely inexpensive. If it is both it will do well.

    • This is exactly my point. If you watch the video from techcrunch were Jolicloud unveiled it's devide, the CEO was brandishing a Macbook air and purporting that Jolicloud would be of any competition. I thought this was irrelevant because the air ins't even a netbook as such.

Also, I don't think Jolicloud's success hinges on how cheap the Jolibook will be. It all depends on the brand name. Jolicloud will never breach one percent market share because no one cares or knows about it. Whereas Google can begin to chip away at MS's market share in the netbook arena simply because of the brand name.

People need to realize that OS features are not the maker or breaker of success. Rather…it is the brand name behind it.

  3. I think the point he was making is based on units sold. Its really pretty easy to interpret any complicated set of data into ways that are very beneficial to you. For Apple, their margins are huge. That's exactly how they stayed afloat while having such a small segment of the desktop market.

If you compare units sold, and the rate at which Android is selling, it won't be long until the Android user base is larger then the iPhone user base.

But all that misses the point of the article… that its difficult to launch some product that competes with the big boys.

  4. Well written article very informative, is it possible, though, for you to go into more detail on this subject, I would like to learn more and think it would show up better in bing (where I located this article too) if you wrote more on this. Cheers

  5. Just what exactly people reported made a great deal of feeling. Nonetheless, give thought to this, imagine if you additional slightly subject material? After all, WE dont prefer to explain tips on how to work your website, yet what if a person added one thing to might be receive peoples focus? Just like a video clip as well as some sort of snapshot as well as not one but two to receive men and women looking forward to what youve got a chance to declare. For me, it will help to make the web site turn on a little bit.

  6. Just what exactly an individual said produced plenty of feel. Nonetheless, look at this, imagine if anyone extra a little bit content material? I am talking about, WHEN I dont desire to let you know easy methods to function a person’s site, however imagine an individual included something in order to it’s possible acquire individuals particular attention? As being a video or even your image and also a pair of to obtain people looking forward to what youve got to express. As a result of, it will help to make your own site come to life slightly.

  7. The problem here is, I don't see Jolicloud being able to do anything that Google can't. Cheaper Hardware? Nope. Looks? Nope. Advertising? Hell, no. Google can crush Jolicloud if Google chooses to.
