Google’s CR-48 Notebook Hacked To Run Ubuntu

It has been over a week since Google revealed their Chrome OS Beta program and the much rumoured CR-48 Chrome Notebook. Many thousands have already received the device; even-so Google is still to send out about 50,000 more of these! Because the CR-48 is only a beta device, Google included a ‘jailbreak’ or ‘developer mode’ switch which effectively makes it possible to do anything with the to (reportedly one can  install any OS onto it).

Well, some people have already began to mess around with their devices. A member of the Chrome OS Forums alerted us about this particular video; above you’ll see a person who’s been able to install Ubuntu onto the Cr-48 notebook. This doesn’t come as a massive surprise though as Google had already suggested that this would be possible.

Try it out

What’s surprising though is that Google has released their own official guide on how to install Ubuntu onto the Cr-48 Chrome notebook. One would have expected them to be a little more protective of a device that they gave out for free for only one purpose; to test out the Chrome OS Beta.

  1. This is a good thing, considering that there isnt a way to play external media. Does anyone know if the netbook remix version of ubuntu works the same?

  2. Well look at Google's competition. Apple and Microsoft. Apple has very strict restrictions on what you can install on many of their notebooks. Google allowing people to run other OS's along with their own proprietary OS makes them look good. People won't feel like Google is trying to restrict them, so the people testing the notebooks may give better reviews of Chrome OS because they have the freedom to choose.

  6. Its such as you learn my mind! You seem to understand a
lot about this, like you wrote the e-book in it or something.
I believe that you just can do with a few percent to drive the message home a little bit, but instead of that, that
is fantastic blog. A great read. I’ll certainly be back.

  7. I was curious if you ever thought of changing the layout of your website?
Its very well written; I love what youve got to say.
But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so people could connect with it
better. Youve got an awful lot of text for
only having 1 or 2 pictures. Maybe you could space
    it out better?
