Archos’ Gbook – Is It For Real?
According to PocketNow, Archos is seeking a European trademark for the term ‘Gbook’. Yes – Gbook as in ‘Google Book’ (at least that’s what we’ve gathered) supposedly to position itself in the Chrome OS netbook market. This news seems to have sent a lot of excitement throughout the blogosphere as news starved Google fans cling to the hope that preparations for the Chrome OS release are well under way.
This is not the first time a trademark application has sent the rumours roaring about Chrome OS. By no means do we dispute that such an application was made, but we are perhaps skeptical of the conclusions that have been reached by some. Last year Google was granted the trademark for “SpeedBook” but yet we are still to see any tangible outcome to this. After-all the CR-48 was released (as a beta testing product) and yet there was no mention of the term Speedbook. Google actually seemed to term the device a ‘Chrome Notebook’, much to the surprise of many. They didn’t even opt to use the more expected term; ‘Chrome Netbook’. So did Google apply for the trademark in anticipation for a future device or were they just having a laugh; posturing as so to speak?
Even if the rumours about Archos’ secret Chrome OS device are indeed true, the question really is; ‘when will we see it’? Will it be during CES this month or are they saving it for a latter date? And even more poignant, will any other companies flash their prototypes to the prying eyes of the media-men who will most certainly throng CES in their thousands this year?
Well we’ve heard the promises form the likes Acer who are promising to be the ‘first movers’; they have sworn that they will be the first to launch Chrome OS tablets. We are yet to see any sign of this being true.
Well, as always, many questions and many rumours; but indeed we still wait for anything substantial.

I wonder what the licensing terms for Chromium OS are? Just as Archos makes a lot of Android devices that don't even qualify to use the Android Market, maybe they're on the scene early because of Chrome's open-source efforts.
I think a couple manufacturers will have some chrome goodies at CES. At least I hope so.
