You Can Stream Video On a Cr-48… Really

If there is one thing the Google ChromeOS Cr-48 doesn’t do, that most think it should, it’s run streaming video from  Netflix. I’ve never seen this as a big problem, but I know there are lots of people that want to watch video on their computers. The Cr-48 can handle running streaming video from Hulu and I was able to steam video from my Amazon VOD (Video on Demand) Library. The nice thing is, not only does it work over WiFi (obviously), I was even able to do it over a 3G connection as well (MiFi 2000 from Verizon Wireless).

Unfortunately, since the update to 0.9.128.14, there is the nagging sound issue. On the bright side that doesn’t seem to be a problem if you reboot the Cr-48 and then go to the site you want to view video from, the sound seems to work fine.

  1. Great update there Wallace! It's interesting that a lot of people have complained about streaming higher quality youtube videos but Amazon videos seem to run fine. Is there any particular reason for this?

  2. Netflix won't work for me. Amazon streaming videos are very, very slow to load (as they are for me on other computers) but they play well.

  3. What's hilarious to me is that there was an ad for Netflix right next to this article lol. Also, you had the Roku loaded on that Amazon page, we bought 2 Roku XD boxes then returned them the next day. Nothing but issues. Anyway, I can stream Hulu and YouTube on my CR-48 but haven't tried streaming Amazon VOD yet because I can't afford to buy episodes of TV shows or movies lol.

My HDTV has a PC connection and I tried hooking my PC up to it last night and it was great so I'm going to buy an extension cable so I don't have to move my desktop. I'll watch Netflix and Hulu from there from now on because some videos don't stream well on the CR-48.

    • The shot of the Roku in the article, if you look closely at the address bar, is on the Amazon Video on Demand home page. The fact that an ad for Netflix appears on this site means Netflix has chosen to advertise on ChromeOSsite.com which is a good thing for the site and perhaps in some small way Netflix is reaching out to fans of ChomeOS to put a little heat on Google to cut a deal and get Netflix running on the Cr-48.

At the end of the day, all the writers and Forum members want to know about if it's possible to live in the cloud. This article is a very good example of the; VOD, media library in the cloud etc…
      o.0
