Google Shells Out Free CR-48 Notebooks To Schools
Google has taken it’s PR offensive to the classroom by offering hundreds of CR-48′s to four chosen schools in the USA. Teachers and pupils recieved one free Chrome notebook each in what seems to be another huge PR campaign by the company. Just a few days ago we announced that they had partnered with a number of companies for what seems to be the largest CR-48 give away since the beta program began.
In the above video are students from Astoria High School which is one of the four schools to recieve this cool little gadget. Pupils claim that they will be able to take notes more easily and quickly on the 8sec boot machine. Well, we know that they’ll be on Facebook all through their classes, wink wink!
Ofcourse, Google’s dishing out of these CR-48′s to schools in the USA is not just a philanthropic endeavor. Google will earn a lot of valuable feedback for their Beta program and more-so, they will make traction in selling their vision of what ‘cloud computing’ will be like to the education sector. After-all students make up one of the largest chunks of notebook users, therefore if this strategy is successful Chrome OS will hit the ground running.
We are yet to see how Google aims to position Chrome OS for business though. Even-so, this latest stunt by Google will already add to the successes of the Chrome OS beta program thus far.

Giving beta laptops to a high school?? Surely the colleges need this more than a few small high schools.
Why would a privately funded College who makes money off of the students going there, need free laptops over a tax based funded public school?
Colleges are almost exclusively nonprofit.
uh for the college students

This is splendid. Google is trying to drive down cost for schools , business and government while opening opportunity for start developers and individuals to get in the apps game. Ultimately Google will make money…. and why not.
