Hexxeh Ditches Chromium OS Lime – For Now

Hexxeh Ditches Chromium OS Lime – For Now

We’ve all been waiting patiently for the next iteration of Hexxeh‘s popular Chromium OS Builds. Hexxeh announced the planned release of Chromium OS Lime after the December 7 Chrome Event which saw the launch of the Chrome OS Beta program. Here’s an excerpt of a blog post be made on December 15th:

ChromiumOS Lime is the successor to ChromiumOS Flow, and brings together the bleeding edge freshness of a Vanilla build and the expanded hardware support you’re used to in a Flow build. I know lots of you have been asking for an update to Flow, and I’m sorry you’ve been waiting so long. So here’s the good news. I’m aiming to release Lime within the next two weeks. It will ship with Lime AU as part of the image, but the servers will not be live at launch. The goal is to release within two weeks, but I’m not making any guarantee that it will be available within two weeks.

Chromium OS Lime Suspended - Indefinitely

Ever since the December 15 promise that Lime may be release within ‘two weeks’ it seems like the project has slid further and further into disarray. A recent tweet from Hexxeh reveals that he has suspended the project indefinitely because of incessant ‘pestering’:

due to endless, and fairly rude pestering, Lime is cancelled. I might return to it in the future, but I’m totally dropping it for now.

He explains further in another tweet:

pestering to the point where I get people screaming at me on IRC, 40+ emails a day and one person actually texting me (I have no idea how..)

Despite putting Chromium OS Lime on hold, Hexxeh says that he will continue to issue his ‘Vanilla’ builds as usual (this also suggests that Chromium OS Flow remains unaffected too). All this drama though doesn’t mean that there won’t be a future updated Chromium OS build from Hexxeh. I guess it means we will just have to wait a little bit longer and be more patient as he does his usual magic in the background.

  2. Understandable. Get bugged enough and even what you like gets tiring.

People. Let the guy be. I mean c’mon. TEXTING? That falls into harassment above and beyond the email bombing. He’s not getting paid for this. He’s doing it because he wants to. Let the man alone.

  3. I don't blame him..He does a tremendous amount of work, for free, to benefit the community,
on top of pursuing his education; and gets harassed?

  4. It's a little embarrassing to be part of this whole Chrome OS adventure and witness the rants visited on a good guy like Hexxeh ( I guess he always wanted to be a palindrome). I've been involved with personal computing for about 30 years and I have seen this kind of mindless behavior before, folks that want everything FREE and they want it to WORK and they want it NOW.

  5. That's instant-gratification culture. I think Liam (Hexxeh) was busy with school (and family, around the holidays), so "Lime" wasn't a priority. That's something a reasonable person would understand. But after the harrassment he talked about on IRC, I'm surprised he hasn't just packed up and left the turf altogether. He must have nerves of tempered steel.

I have to admit that I'm starting to get anxiety-ridden e-mails, now that I've been publishing unofficial Cr-48 builds on a somewhat haphazard, "when I feel like something important has been added to the source code" basis. I'm fairly experienced with tact, so warding off flame without invoking Godwin comes naturally… but it begs the question of, "you got a laptop for free, now you want someone else to emboss it in gold leaf?" (Eh, I got a free laptop, so I chose to turn around and play with the source code, let others download the stuff I'm testing, submit bug reports, and even submit source code changes. And it still seems like a good deal to me.)

Nigel: Flow is a static build of a somewhat outdated (at this point) build of Chromium OS with a bunch of customization. There aren't updates for it; that was the concept for Lime. Vanilla has updates and is basically the "x86-generic" source code build, automatically generated.

  6. We can only thank Hexxeh for his diligence.

Some comment on the Lime thing. Hexxeh did indicate two weeks and invited people to participate via IRC. Also, Hexxeh's blog pages continued to keep these things up, where perhaps deleting these things from the blog posts may have diffused the situation earlier.

I think that the Cr-48 presented a challenge for Liam, in terms of cracking the boot process and loading other OSs etc, which put the whole Lime thing on the back burner.

  7. People should not be jerks. Also, Hexxeh should not be posting dates he can't keep. He should not be inviting people to participate in the IRC if the activity is going to bother him. His work cracking the Cr-48 boot process did nothing to help Google, Chrome OS, Chromium, or the Chromium community. Is this a Chrome OS site or a "hack the free computer site"? All he needed to do was remove his projected date from his web page and shut down the IRC channel. Perhaps he should consider open-sourcing or sharing his Lime work with other developers who are more interested in promoting Chromium, so that he can have time to work on his other pet projects.

  9. HELLO!
I've found a cool trick on fixing computers, If you want a working computer the only one that comes with a computer is microsoft. So you tell the person that if he she wants to use the computer they have to use it offline, and use a chromium os build from thumb drive, to remain totally virus free! boot up chromium os, all you have to do is use it off a USB Drive. then if you want to fix a computer, you download and then type mv "/home/chronos/user/Downloads" "/media/dirve name" so in effect you can fix a windows computer with the chromium os that HEXXEH provides. I would build my own build but I don't have a 64 bit machine. so Thanks chromium.org and thanks hexxeh
