The Samsung Chromebox – What is it?

google io 2011 day 10520 13051352271 The Samsung Chromebox What is it?In all the excitment about Chrome Notebooks, very few have focussed on the possibility of Google pushing Chrome OS to the desktop. I remember a few months ago writing about my vision of Chrome OS working on the nettop plaform. It seems that I wasn’t too far off; Google unveiled today Samsung’s ‘Chromebox’ which will work as a none portable platform for their new operating system.

This points a to the possible trajectory that Google wants to take with Chrome OS. It is likely that the Internet giant will focus their new operating system on both the notebook and the Desktop platform, leaving Android OS in the tablet/smartphone market.

The device will begin shipping this summer alongside the Samsung Series 5 and the Acer Chromebook. The Chromebox will initially be aimed at business customers but we see no reason why Google won’t be opening the floodgates to the consumer market.

  1. Will GoogleTV be a part of this ChromBox?

I just watched Day 2 of Google I/O 20011 on YouTube and think this is so cool. Thanks!

  3. I was an "early adaptor" when I bought a Sanyo Beta VCR in 1979 for $600. Then a couple of years ago, I bought a Toshiba HD DVD player. I think this time, I will wait awhile to make sure Chromebox is not another 8 track player. . I am not sure I like the idea of minimal internal memory or a cost that is higher than a Windows box.. But I see big changes coming with the internet and TV in the coming few years. I like Linux better than Microsoft, but competition is a good thing. I see computers that I already own and Ubuntu OS as my choice for the foreseeable future. I will continue to buy standard dvds, listen to NPR radio, watch YouTube, and read a lot of books I get at the thrift store. In India, they are talking about $30 tablet computers.

  4. Most of the people in the world are in the third world. Two thirds of everyone lives on under $2 a day. However, people who live in mud huts are getting cell phones. I see great potential of Linux to make the information age accessible to the great majority of humanity. I don't see Microsoft, Apple, or Google as the ones to do that or to set the standards. There is much to be said for making use of older, cheaper technologies. For example, I buy audio books on cassette tape for $1, VHS tapes for 50 cents, and books for a quarter that inform and entertain me as much as I can absorb. Radio is still free. And so is a walk in the woods.

  5. This is first time i heard about Samsung Chromebox. I thought Samsung and Google gathered with development of new things. This will be produce good products in the future.
